Light Years by Kass Morgan

September 13, 2018

I came to the conclusion that I am a bit of a sci-fi fan, but I haven't read many novels in the genre successfully, so when this golden tome showed up on my doorstep, I was definitely intrigued! I am unacquainted with Kass Morgan's writing, but I know her previous series is now a successful show, so I was ready for some fantastic cinematic writing.

synopsis from Goodreads:

Reeling from the latest attack by a mysterious enemy, the Quatra Fleet Academy is finally admitting students from every planet in the solar system after centuries of exclusivity.

Hotshot pilot Vesper, an ambitious Tridian citizen, dreams of becoming a captain - but when she loses her spot to a brilliant, wisecracking boy from the wrong side of the asteroid belt, it makes her question everything she thought she knew. Growing up on the toxic planet Deva, Cormak will take any chance he can get to escape his dead-end life and join the Academy - even if he has to steal someone's identity to do it. Arran was always considered an outsider on icy Chetire, always dreaming of something more than a life working in the mines. Now an incoming cadet, Arran is looking for a place to belong - he just never thought that place would be in the arms of a Tridian boy. And Orelia is hiding a dark secret - she's infiltrated the Academy to complete a mission, one that threatens the security of everyone there. But if anyone finds out who she really is, it'll be her life on the line.

last line from ARC synopsis
Can these cadets put their differences aside and become a team to defend their world from a cunning enemy...and maybe even fall in love?

What I liked:

Each character felt so real and well thought out. I'm not even sure I could pick a favourite because of how well each one was written, but Vesper and Orelia might have a SLIGHT edge. (Vesper, because that's the name of my favourite human being on the planet and Orelia because she is just fascinating and complex and flawed. You know how much I love my flawed characters!)

The story was well paced and captivating. Morgan is a great storyteller! She masterfully weaves together four different POVs without any hitch and seamlessly includes so many diverse plot lines with class and ease.

The romance that is hinted at in the synopsis is definitely NOT as prevalent as the back of the book would have you believe. Hallelujah. The scenes included were done VERY well and not even slightly cringey for this self-professed prude.

THAT ENDING. I may not have discussed this much on my blog, but I am a HUGE fan of messy endings, cliff hangers, and dark endings. (Keep away Disney-fied endings!) Morgan nails the ending and I declare, with no doubt, you'll be preordering the next book ASAP.

Fans of addicting and fast reads, sci-fi, cocky boys and fiery girls, Ender's Game (the movie) and space are SURE to love this one!
